i'd sacrifice my cred for you
launch.com music video watching at work strikes again!

next time travelling music question: how about all that crappy music these days? except, what if it's not bad at all, but there's something fundamental about getting above the age of like 17 or 18 where you can no longer stand anything about the music they play on the radio? or maybe your ear just gets tired after a while of those shimmery, buzzing guitars and stuff. what i'm getting at here is that, when i was 14 or 15 or whatever, i thought 311 and hole were like awesome bands. i think i even used to talk online to indy about how awesome the new days of the new song was, and stuff like that. so clearly i have no internal good taste meter, and more to the point, i don't think the stuff that's currently coming out is all that different.

and yet!

i have to admit, i don't mind a few of these songs. the whole 'pop punk' thing. the guys in the bands annoy the hell out of me, just looking at them and their stupid over-exagerrated lipsynch movements and 'funny' videos. and this guy in this song actually uses the line "remember the time we realized 'thriller' was our favorite song" TWICE in the same song! oh, great romantic moment there. it's so cute! i can totally relate!

but i'm getting off the point, which is that, aside from all that, these aren't bad little pop compositions. a little heavy on the gimmicks usually and sometimes with a few open seams, but not categorically different from my beloved beach boys hits. obviously different in quality. but, with that in mind, here's a few pop punk songs i've absorbed through radio and the web that, if you put asides your aspirations of being too cool for this (and the invariably bad lyrics and faceless performances), are actually pretty good little tunes....

new found glory - hit or miss

blink 182 - man overboard

bowling for soup - punk rock 101

the corrs - breathless

blink 182 - all the small things

good charlotte - girls & boys

sum 41 - makes no difference

the donnas - who invited you?

dexter freebish - leaving town

more to come someday.

notes:

the corrs have nothing at all to do with this, but man that song gets stuck in my head!

i have yet to see a donnas video that doesn't have the same leadin to the chorus as that one where they're auditioning for the talent show.

blink 182 are the kings of this particular wave of this genre (green day obviously has hold of the previous wave) and so i obviously had to have a few of their effervescently genius hits.

punk rock 101 is probably the most interesting thing on here, it's a deconstruction of the genre that participates in the genre at the same time. genuinely postmodern, and i mean that. it's also cynical and shameless, but so is the guy that tried to guilt trip me for copy services not being open on the weekend. in other words, to quote wyclef john featuring the rock, "IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!"
