last night, the plans for a future war
flash forward to 2004 and beyond. the future holds instabilities, unprecedented shifts in holding of wealth and value. the bottom of the barrell will fall out from under a number of tremendous national investments, leaving us deprived, wretched, and inevitably, conscious in a new way of material realities and the possibilities of localized political power. a patchwork of smaller nations carved out of the former continental united states is not an entirely unthinkable reality, although the path in that direction would no doubt be pounded into the ground by ugliness, blood, and atrocity.

but eventually, it will become obvious to everyone that in practical terms the different regions of the united states have long had very different economies, ideologies, and political agendas. it will make more sense for all involved for the country to be at least bisected and possibly trisected: the midwest/northeast, the southeast/west, and california plus the pacific northwest.... the viability of each of these agglomerations as entirely independent states will depend much on what takes place between now and then, although it seems clear that the sunbelt will be the most thrown out of alignment by the hobbling of the automotive sprawl society...

if the principle of democractic self-determination means much of anything at all, then it means the right of territories to remove themselves from a government they no longer wish to be associated with. the right of secession, though associated by a century of propaganda solely with the odious claim to a right of slave-holding, is the logical basis for the declaration of independence.

moral: all ye campus lefties of whatever stripes, don't move to canada. instead form enclaves in the cities and towns of all those places likely to go over to a social democracy of the united states when the changes come (whenever that is). build connections there with all people and groups. be ready to lead when that time comes.

of course this amounts to basically abandoning all those classes of people which your beliefs bind you to protect... but somehow i doubt that's an exercise in doublethink that anyone is all that unexperienced in pulling off...
