11:31 a.m. - 2004-08-18 * "Night and Day" is Virginia Woolf's second novel. I found myself more or less agreeing with the conventional wisdom (and, if I'm not mistaken, Woolf's own opinion): it's a step back from "The Voyage Out," and overlong and occasionally repetitive. (How many times can she use variations on the verb "to exalt"?) BUT - it does have a certain political/social consciousness, more clearly elaborated than TVO's preoccupation with the "unfinished" woman, and it is elevated above being a minor genre piece (it's a "romantic misunderstandings" type of novel...many conversations in drawing rooms) by possessing a fair share of refreshing insight into personality and character. |
