let's show the audience at home what you do for a living
i ended up staying up an extra hour last night because it turns out that really late at night, the game show network runs really, really old game shows. black and white, so old that when people hold up a white card with their answer on it, there's a black fuzzy halo surrounding the white. presumably the typical, sanctioned response to programs this old is ironic detachment and amusement at their quaintness, but man, i was into it. i caught one episode of the original "to tell the truth" followed by "what's my line." i was profoundly caught up in how NICE everyone seemed. perhaps because these shows involve little to no actual competition, and everyone on them just seemed to be there because it was a fun game to play. it would be like making a tv show out of the board games "cranium" or "hoopla." but i felt really peaceful and happy watching these people, now all dead, banter, tease, make terrible guesses, and be genuinely surprised when the mystery guest turned out to be someone's father.
